a
love of culture, the scent of printers' ink
a center for literature, social sciences, science and
technology, and nursing
a treasure-trove of scholarly writing and textbooks
Wunan Book Co., Ltd., was established in 1968 as Wunan
Publishing. Wunan takes its name from the Wunan district
of T'ung-hsiao township, Miaoli County, Taiwan, the hometown
of its founder, Jung-Chuan Yang . By 1975 the company
had outgrown its previous office, upgraded its government
registration to match its increased capital, and moved
to No. 1 T'ung-shan St. in Taipei. The years of hard work
since that time have paid off. Wunan has expanded its
range and number of titles. By earning the respect and
support of academics, business leaders, and the general
public, Wunan has continued to grow.
The
rapid expansion necessitated another move in 1992. Since
that time, Wunan has occupied all seven floors of a building
on a 7,200-square-foot lot on Hoping E. Rd. Wunan has
several branch companies: Kao-Une Book Co., Shu-chuan
Book Co., Taiwan Ancient Book Co., Research in Applied
Psychology Magazine Co., and Wunan Cultural Plaza Bookstores
(in Taichung, Shalu, and Fengchia). The goal of each of
these subsidiaries is the same as that of Wunan: to enhance
learning and expand the dissemination of culture.

Goals,
policy, philosophy
The best works of scholarship are here!
Throughout its history, Wunan has been steadfast in its
dedication to disseminate culture widely and to propagate
learning. We have worked hard to publish widely in literature
and the social sciences. To benefit our readers, Wunan
is now expanding aggressively in publishing titles on
applied science.
1. Our goals: to disseminate culture and propagate learning.
The wisdom of scholars and the talents of experts are
the seeds of culture. As a cultural publisher, it's our
responsibility to see that these seeds can grow, blossom,
and bear fruit. Wunan believes in being a bridge between
writers and readers. Our talented editors help our writers
achieve influential, popular, successful works with both
scholars and the public at large.
Wunan's goal is to widen the space for culture and to
help it grow both at home and abroad.
2. Our policy: to publish college textbooks and works
on social science, the humanities, applied science, and
pedagogy.
Originally, Wunan emphasized publishing academic works
and post-secondary textbooks in the social sciences, the
humanities, and literature. Wunan, in our more than thirty
years of devoted labor, has published some 2,000 different
books. We have worked hard to earn our position as Taiwan's
leading publisher in the social sciences and humanities.
We are working to expand out range to applied sciences
- such as technology, engineering, and nursing - in order
to become a full-range publisher.
3. Our philosophy: Academic excellence over monetary considerations.
Although publishing companies operate in the business
world, they also must embrace cultural and spiritual enrichment.
For us, furthering knowledge takes precedence over market
concerns. Even books with limited readerships receive
our full attention. We do not sacrifice important books
just because they might be difficult to print. Our primary
consideration when evaluating a manuscript for publication
is its scholarly importance.
Strength through teamwork
In addition to the usual management complement of chairman
of the board, general manager, and vice general manager,
we have an editorial management department (editor-in-chief,
vice editor-in-chief, managing editors, and copyright
specialists), editorial department (seven departments),
printing department, sales department (distribution center),
computer department, planning department, and administration.
Each department is headed by a manager, along with an
assistant manager or chief.
We have nearly 100 employees, all of them experts in their
fields. Because of their aggressive teamwork, our business
continues to expand.
Our modern, spacious offices foster cultural work.
A treasure-house of knowledge: the Wunan publishing building.
Extensive distribution network, top-notch service
Wunan has been computerized for more than a decade. From
publishing to distribution - everything runs together
smoothly. We've been on the information superhighway since
1997, with a website that provides customers with fast
and attentive service. We have our own efficient distribution
network that sends our 2,000 different titles directly
to colleges, locations islandwide, mainland China, and
overseas. More than 400 retail bookstores help extend
our widespread distribution network to every corner of
Taiwan.
Knowledge unhindered by international borders
Since 1989, Wunan has sought and gained the rights to
produce Chinese translations of more than 400 foreign
works. Our translations are part of our long-term strategy
of eliminating the language barriers that have stood in
the way of knowledge.
Speed, efficiency, and focus: our computer center
Our unlimited distribution takes us everywhere
Wunan established its first Cultural Plaza Bookstore in
July 1995 at No. 2 Chungshan Rd. in Taichung. It has more
than 3,400 square feet. Other Wunan Cultural Plaza bookstores
have been founded in Shalu (May 1999) and Fengchia (August
1999). By stepping beyond its role in publishing and entering
retail, Wunan is expanding its service to readers.
